FLAG OFFICIALS

2020 Flag Football - General Information for Referees

Flag football continues to grow as a sport. In fact, it is the fastest growing sport in North America.
One of the many reasons is the officials. In order for any sport to grow, officials are needed.

This year as it was last year, we are relying heavily on the Manitoba Football Referees Association (MFRA)
to train, evaluate and schedule officials.
If you are interested in becoming an official for Flag Football you need to be at least 13 years of age.
Contact flag@mfra.ca to get more information or register as an official.

Here is some information on what you can expect in the 2020 season:
  • Projected season kicks off April 25th and 26th at IG Field.
  • Projected Championship games to be held at IG Filed the 20th or 21st of June (subject to change based on the schedule).
  • Every referee, whether you are new or returning, will be required to register on our website and pay a $40.20 Football Manitoba/Football Canada Fee Membership fee. This is a yearly fee. You will not be asked to pay this fee if you have paid it, nor will you have to pay it for any other Football Manitoba Program this year like Winter Flag. If there is any issue or if online payment is not possible, please contact the Football Manitoba Office to make other arrangements.
  • Referees are required to supply their own jerseys.  You may purchase your own through a sporting goods store or contact the MFRA to assist.  We do have a few brand new jerseys for sale (larger sizes) that we can deduct from your pay.
  • Clinics and training for new referees, and refresher clinics for returning referees will be announced by the MFRA.
  • Referees will receive their assignments through our website referee platform (Goalline)
  • Pay rates starts as $15/per game and increases $1 per game once you reach 20 games and then again $1 when you reach 30 games officiated.
  • If you officiate a game solo, you are paid $20 for that game,or what we call solo assignments.
  • Site supervisors will play the same role, with the exception that they will now be required to collect & submit the scores & stats EVERY EVENING in Goalline. That way the standings will be updated in real time. The MFRA will host the Site Supervisor clinic.

Football Manitoba will again partner with tackle clubs to act as "hosts" for the flag season. The season schedule will be rotated through these clubs. This gives the league access to as many as 40 flag fields as 4 or 5 flag fields can fit onto one regulation tackle field.  Everyone will have access to washrooms and some clubs may open their canteens.

If you are interested in officiating flag football or would like more information, please contact our office.
